What is Intermittent Fasting?

According to Todd Morgan, PhD., a prominent leader in intermittent fasting research on behalf of the University of Southern California (USC), our body is instinctual. After just five days of consuming 1,000 calories or less, our digestive system goes into famine mode.

As a result, your body draws in as much fat, fiber, and water as possible. In its wake are a ton of useless cells, dead tissues, and unnecessary fat. This island of misfit toys is either used for immediate energy or it’s flushed out of the system. That is the ideology behind Intermittent Fasting (IF).

Intermittent Fasting is such a unique “diet.” That’s because the rules behind the concept are rather lax. All-in-all, intermittent fasting is restricting calories from your body over a prolonged window of time. However, there are a number of ways to try intermittent fasting. These guidelines are called “protocols.”

Some of the most popular intermittent fasting protocols include:

  • 16/8 Method – Fast 16 Hours, Eat 8
  • 5:2 Method – Eat Normal 5 Days a Week, Only 500 Calories for 2 Days
  • Eat-Stop-Eat – Fast a Full 24 Hours Twice a Week
  • Alternate-Day Fasting – Fast (or Limit to 500 Calories) Every Other Day
  • Warrior – Eat Small Amounts of Fruits and Veggies During Day and One Big Meal at Night

What makes intermittent fasting so unique is that you have to tailor this diet around your routine. When you eat is dictated by the hours you sleep, the time of the day you need the energy most, and when you plan to get your sweat-on in.

While all of these protocols have shown to be effective. There is a lesser-known offshoot of intermittent fasting that I found effective for myself. This protocol is known as OMAD.

OMAD and Weight Loss

If you can figure out what FOMO means, then anyone reading this can probably put two-and-two together that OMAD stands for “One Meal a Day.” That’s a stark difference between some of the aforementioned protocols.

The most common form of intermittent fasting is the 16/8 Method. That means for eight hours a day, you can eat whatever you desire. The same goes for Alternate Day Fasting. On the days you are free to eat, binge on! However, OMAD doesn’t follow this mindset.

OMAD means business. It’s one meal within one hour a day. The other 23 hours of the day, you fast. This puts your body into small stress mode. Anytime you put stress on a chemical compound, it stimulates the area surrounding it. This causes your body to burn off fatty adipose tissue. Meanwhile, your body is in famine mode, holding in essential nutrients and vitamins to use at the appropriate moment to carry out critical bodily functions.


HCG stands for human chorionic gonadotropin. In theory, HCG can be broken down into two distinct principles:

  • Consuming 500 Calories During Meal
  • Receiving HCG Injections

The first principle is the most restrictive part of the diets. Most of us are just getting warmed up at 500 calories. However, we live in a world of overindulgence. We pay the price in a litany of health problems including an alarmingly high rate of obesity. Practicing HCG helps us find the most sufficient nutrients that will provide our body the nourishment necessary to power us through life.

To make it more restrictive, I practiced HCG at the same time as OMAD every other day. That meant I consumed my 500 calories in one sitting and fasted for the rest of the day. While this may sound dangerous, I made some delicious meals that were under 500 calories. This includes:

  • Green Lentil Noodle Bowls
  • Fried Egg and Asparagus
  • Salmon Salad
  • Marsala Meatloaf

Yup. Meatloaf. Again, we need to recondition the way we think about food. 500 calories isn’t a lot, but it’s enough to get quality and sustainable nutrition. It’s what you are putting into your body that matters.

Speaking of putting into your body, the key component of the HCG diet is HCG injections. However, I had success with HCG sublingual drops. HCG is a hormone that the body naturally creates. The first three months of pregnancy is when a woman’s HCG levels are the highest. Three months postpartum, the levels of HCG drop.
